A Long Walk to Water shows how one person with hardship in their
childhood can pull through and achieve a lot. The story is about Salva, an
eleven-year old boy who had to run away from his tribe at a young age to escape
the war in South Sudan. Salva had a tough life and lost all contact with his
family for about nineteen years. His Uncle was shot dead directly in front of
him and he had to fend for himself as a Lost
Boy. Later in life, he became a great inspirational figure. He eventually
founded Water for South Sudan which
provides clean water to the villages and tribes there. By having a clean water
source nearby, less people got sick and girls were able to attend school. He
even helped provide clean water to tribes that have a long history of war with
his own. Salva’s hard work and perseverance paid off: he gave a TEDx Youth
speech which is quite inspirational and he was reunited with his family in
Sudan shortly after being adopted into an American family. Once he got an email
from one of his cousins saying that his father was still living, he immediately
flew to South Sudan to see his sick father. He later found out that his mother and
one sibling were living too, and were still in his original village. A Long Walk to Water is a must-read book
for readers who have hardship in their own lives but still strive to achieve
their goals.
